The DIY Teen Statement Pillow is one sewing idea teens will love. Sewing projects for teens can be tricky but this pillow is sure to get approval. Make throw pillows with their favorite phrase on it for a fun piece that will spruce up their bedroom. Find the video tutorial for this project at the bottom of the page.

DIY Teen Statement Pillow


  • Pillow (or pillow form) material
  • Measuring tape
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Needle
  • Matching thread
  • Glitter Paint
  • Paint brush
  • Paper (to print or write your letters on)


  1. Measure your pillow form and measure out your material. Material should be 2 and 1/2 times the length. (Material will wrap around the pillow form) Width should be 1/2 inch wider to accomodate 1/4 inch seam allowance.
  2. Hem - On the edges creating the envelope, use your iron and press down one inch hem and then fold down again and iron - Repeat on other side using sewing machine, sew down these hems - press to finish.
  3. Either hand draw, or using a font of your choice, print out the letters to your statement "Princess, Diva, Cupcake, Star, etc" and cut out.
  4. Center your letters on the material and using a marking pencil or transfer paper, transfer the letter outlines to the material.
  5. Use glitter paint (or fabric paint of your choice) and fill in the letter outlines on the material (covering the markings) with paint brush. Wait till completely dry.
  6. Turn Right Sides Together, making sure letters are centered on the front of your project and the back hems are folded over each other creating an "envelope".
  7. Machine or hand sew sides closed using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Turn right side out.
  8. Attach feather trim with needle and thread.
  9. Insert pillow form.
