History of American Girl Dolls and Doll Clothes Patterns

In 1986, Pleasant Company released their line of 18-inch dolls, which resemble girls between the ages of eight and eleven. The first line of dolls came with books that shared a story of each doll and typically centered on certain time periods in American history. In 1995, the Pleasant Company released another line of dolls that buyers could design themselves based on skin tone, eye color, hair color and other attributes. The American Girl doll phenomenon branched out to starting the American Girl magazine, a virtual world online called Innerstar University, and even several films centered on specific American Girl doll characters.

These dolls were very popular in the 1990s and 2000s and still are today, despite the cost of the dolls and their accessories. The high cost of accessories for the dolls have driven a lot of people to making their own doll clothes for the American Girl dolls. Some studies report that you can spend over $600 for a doll, outfits, and accessories. You can find these doll clothes patterns all over the Internet, and there are many on Check out the variety of doll clothes patterns for American Girl Dolls here: How to Make American Girl Doll Clothes: 16+ Free Doll Clothes Patterns.

For those of you who are having trouble getting the patterns to print, go to your devices area on your computer and check the parameters for your printer. You may need to reset your print margins to 0 or your print scale to 100%. Also, in any free download, you are going to get the "may harm your computer" thing. This is coming up because of your virus blocking software not recognizing if it is spam or not. You can choose to override this if you feel secure about the web site you are on. If you don't feel that secure but want to run it anyway, print it, then use your defragging and cleaning software. You should defrag and clean once a week anyway to protect your computer.

I cannot figure out how to get the pattern.

try this link. it worked for me

I've tried several times to get this pattern. Each time I'm redirected to designers site and it says to get pattern click here, when I click there it goes to a security error page. I don't know what else to do; even when I say to save the pattern it only saves the page that I have to click on and get the same error page. If this is no longer valid, it should be removed or noted that it has expired.

My pc won't print your Amer.doll pattern as it says it could possibly harm my computer.what gives here. why didn't you just make it printable?

thank you! I linked right to it and after seeing you post about using fleece I made a few adjustments and got a couple of great outfits for my girls' dolls!

When I click on "Click Here for Sewing Pattern" it takes me to her site. There it tell me to email her for the pattern. I have emailed her several time with no results.

As the author of this pattern I have submitted to over 500 people. The response I have received has been wonderful and I have gotten several pictures from people showing their handywork. Is this pattern perfect ? No it was my first pattern ever, but it works with the forgiveness of fleece!!

I have been unable to get the pattern after several emails to you.

It might be perfect for some but what about the others of us who have had no luck downloading it. The issue isn't even being addressed on here, just ignored. If you no longer want to give it out it should be removed instead of having us go from one link to the other and the end up on an error page or some of the other issues others have had. It looks really cute but that doesn't help, so perfect, not so much at this point anyways.

I just came across your link, I signed up and then I went to clothes (American Doll) and up POPPED a smut site. Not good! Now I am afraid of using your site.

@young 0524216, We just tested the link for this project and it directs you to the original blogger's site with the full sewing project available for free, and all of the advertisements that appear on this site are from reputable companies. If you remember exactly what link you clicked on that misdirected you, please let us know so that we can further investigate the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience, --editors of AllFreeSewing

@ Stitching Time, Please click on the link on our site that says "click here for sewing pattern." You will be taken to the original pattern designer's blog, where you can find the pattern available in full for free. I hope this helps! --Editors of AllFreeSewing

I was also unable to download the pattern without subscribing. . It shouldn't be listed on this website if it is not free.

I don't have any American Girl dolls, but I do have dolls the same height, my problem is my dolls are all wider than the American Girls dolls and patterns are. Why doesn't anyone make doll patterns for the average doll you buy in the store? Or for that matter Clothes for the Ken doll, if I had his clothes I could at least make something that would fit.

@lostie - I did what you suggested, with no success at all. @Mariddithdesigns; Please Fix your Links!

I ran into the same problem. When you click download and print, it brings up a subscription box with 3 options, none of which are free. =(

@maduck3 - I'm not quite sure why you're being prompted to pay for the pattern(s). When I click on the "Click here for sewing pattern" link, I'm taken to a page where I can then click on each item of clothing (18 Doll Pants Pattern, for instance) and it allows me to download the pattern. Could you describe what you are seeing that indicates that you have to pay? That will help us further troubleshoot the problem. Thank you, -The editors of AllFreeSewing

Every time I try and download it comes up to pay also. What are we doing wrong?

Hi flossie 1949, I downloaded the patterns and found out more by clicking on Mariddithdesigns on you right (not the button to follow) and I found out a wonderful flower applique to use in my daughters dresses !!!!

I am very frustrated! Every time I try to download the hat pattern, a pop-up box requires payment. Isn't this a free pattern???
