The word "apron" is derived from the French word "naperon"? For many years, the phrase "a naperon" was mispronounced until it became the term "an apron," which is what is used today. For hundreds of years, though, aprons have not simply been used as a way to keep your clothes clean during messy kitchen tasks. During the reign of Charles II in England, aprons were more than just tools of function; learning how to make an apron that made a statement became the name of the game.

Women would compete in creating apron patterns to see who could come up with the most elaborate designs. Oftentimes, the gorgeous results of these stiff competitions were passed on from the women who created them to their favorite family members. Full aprons began to gain popularity during the American colonial era, when access to fabric slowly began to become easier. Thankfully, these days a DIY apron pattern is as easy to come by as the fabric itself.
