  • 5 inches of Velcro

High Chair Safety Tips:

This DIY portable high chair craft is a god-send for mothers, but be sure your little one is safely secured while enjoying your family meal no matter where you are.

  • Be sure that the straps are nice and snug but give your child enough room to be comfortable.
     
  • Use the high chair only for meals to keep its use routine.
     
  • Do not use the lap table as its own restraint. The table is not a secure strap, and you won’t want your child to fall out of the chair.
     
  • Never leave the child unattended in the high chair.
     
  • Don’t let your child stand in the high chair.
     
  • Distance the high chair far enough away from the table that they can’t use their legs to knock over the chair.
     
  • For foldable high chairs, be sure that every part is locked into place before placing your child in the seat.
     

How to Make a Tie Travel High Chair:

  1. Cut the long strap piece: 36" x 7" tall. Cut both fabrics and batting to this measurement.

  2. Cut the seat: 19" x 11" tall. Cut both fabrics and batting to this measurement.

  3. Cut the connecting tab: 4" x 5-1/2" tall. Cut both fabrics and batting to this measurement.

  4. Sew the connecting tab first. Right sides together with the batting on top.

  5. Sew the long sides of the tab using a 5/8" seam. Leave the short sides open.

  6. Turn right-side out and put aside.

  7. Layer the seat pieces with the batting on the bottom, then fabric right sides together.

  8. Measure the opening for the connecting tab. it will go in the middle of the short side of the seat piece. Mark the opening by pinning at 4-1/2" and 7".

  9. Pin around the perimeter of fabric to hold it together while sewing.

  10. Round off one of the corners. Use that corner as a template by folding the fabric and cutting along the curve. Do this for all sides.

  11. Sew the fabrics together using a 5/8" seam, removing pins as you go or at the end.

  12. Turn right-side out. Press both the seat and the connecting tab.

  13. Insert one end of the connecting tab into the opening of the seat, about 1" deep.

  14. Sew together using a 1/4" seam. Continue topstitching around the perimeter of the seat.

  15. Layer the batting and fabrics for the strap piece.

  16. On a long side, place a pin 4" from the edge to mark an opening for the tab. The other pin is placed 6-1/2" from the edge (2-1/2" down from the first pin).

  17. Continue pinning the fabrics together to prep for sewing.

  18. Round off the corners in the same way as for the seat piece.

  19. Begin sewing at one pin and continue until you reach the second pin. Remove pins and turn right-side out.

  20. Press the strap piece.

  21. Insert the loose end of the connecting tab into the opening of the strap piece.

  22. Sew in place using a 1/4" seam and continue topstitching around the perimeter of the strap.

  23. Cut 3" of the rough side of the Velcro and place in the middle on the long end of the interior fabric.

  24. Sew around the edge of the Velcro to secure to the fabric.

  25. Cut 5" of the fuzzy side of the Velcro and place on the short end of the strap on the exterior fabric.

  26. Sew around the edge of the Velcro to secure to the fabric.

  27. To use: Weave the straps around the slots of a chair. Loop the strap around to Velcro in back. The seat piece goes inside of the loop and creates a flap over the strap piece.
