What is a Rag Quilt?

You may think that a rag quilt gets its name from being made out of rags, but that's really not the truth. It's actually made from a different technique than regular quilt patterns that's called quilt-as-you-go. Each block in a rag quilt is made out of three layers: the top, the batting, and the backing. These layers are sewn together in a sort of fabric sandwich to make the quilt.

If you're a beginner at quilting, a rag quilt is the best project to start with! You can learn and practice basic skills like rotary cutting and precision piecing on these quilt patterns. You will not have to worry about binding, which makes these quilts much easier to make and much quicker. The actual quilting technique is done on individual squares rather than on the whole quilt, which is an added bonus. You can make a rag quilt out of many types of fabrics, even denim like the quilt pattern above.
