EDITOR NOTES:

  • Most of these homemade hand warmers will be heated in the microwave for 30-40 seconds. Be sure you keep an eye on it while it heats. Also, it's better to start with less time to see what it needs. You can always heat it longer.

  • It's important to remember that if you're planning to use the microwave to heat up your hand warmers, they need to be 100% cotton or natural material. Anything synthetic, such as polyester or fleece, can be dangerous to heat as it is made with plastic.

Flannel DIY Hand Warmers

Not only do these charming and rustic Flannel DIY Hand Warmers feel soft and warm, but they allow you to upcycle, too! Use old flannel shirts, blankets, or whatever else you have lying around or can find at your local resale shops to make these thrifty warmers.

Note from the designer: "I spent the past summer scavenging my local thrift shops for flannel shirts…and I ended up with a bunch of them! Important to note, I made sure each shirt was 100% cotton before purchasing."

Tie-Dye Homemade Hand Warmers

These adorable little hearts aren't only fun accessories but this is one of the coolest projects to work on. The gorgeous look of Shibori tie-dye is optional but really makes these DIY hand warmers stand out from the crowd.

Note from the designer: "Tie-dye and summer go hand in hand, but in winter we are all about the Japanese art of Shibori dyeing."

Kid's Hand Warmer Muff

If you want something a bit more substantial for yourself or your children, how about a muff hand warmer? This classic design is comfy and warming. We love this particular design for kids since you can use their favorite fabric.

Note from the designer: "This project is great for beginners and can be made for a mama or a little lady. I also added a hidden pocket inside to stow away trinkets, or in my case a phone. Now, can gloves do that?"

Spearmint DIY Hand Warmers

These cute homemade hand warmers have an extra element that makes them must-sew winter accessories: scent! Adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the rice you use to fill these will leave them smelling like the season.

Note from the designer: "Now my house smells like spearmint because of these little hand warmers."

Lovey Hot Hand Warmers

These cute little hearts are made of wool, which can be upcycled from old sweaters or other pieces of clothing. However, this designer got super clever after some trial and error and made it so that there's a separate piece to heat up and the outside wool is washable!

Note from the designer: "This set has a separate insert for microwaving, and then you can machine wash the heart-shaped shells."

Simple DIY Muff

This sweet hand muff sewing pattern offers the ability to use some complementary or contrasting fabrics to create a fun and functional muffler for your kids (or yourself). It uses the softest Minky fabric to make this an ultra luxurious winter accessory!

Note from the designer: "Instead of turning the ends in toward each other, I folded the flannel over the ends of the Minky Dot to make a contrast on the edges."

Oven-Warm Gingerbread Hand Warmers

What screams winter more than warm gingerbread? Aren't these the cutest little warming friends you've ever seen? Simple to make and perfect stocking stuffers for your little ones, too!

Note from the designer: "They also make wonderful little bean bags. You could use them as a pincushion, but that seems cruel. Or maybe as a paper weight? However you use them or gift them, I hope they make your season sweeter!"

DIY Flannel Hand Warmers

Not only does this hand warmers DIY include the design for little ones but she explains how you can adjust the size to make larger heating pads! Ideal for drafty living rooms or bedrooms any time of year.

Note from the designer: "I can’t even begin to express how fantastic these are! I use the ones I have all the time. I never use my heating pad any more. I just pop one of these packs in the microwave and I’m good to go."

1940s Faux Fur Muff Tutorial
