This is very insightful. A few people shy away from patterns once they get used to DIY or since they don't know how to read one. If you're self taught the a more visual approach is best, you should learn how to read a pattern and how to make one then the rest is easy. This blog does cover the most important points for most clothing items so you should give this a try first.
