There's no doubt that 2020, 2021, and then 2022 were strange years for the entire world. There were so many changes and adjustments to regular life in the face of COVID, that no one could go on with "business as usual." One of the biggest changes was the use of masks in everyday life.

The benefit of DIYing your own fabric face mask is that you can make it as stylish you want while also adding extra protection, like layers and filters. These face mask patterns and tutorials include a variety of types, from basic pleated masks and curved styles to 3D and "breathable" styles. There's even a clear mask for lipreading and festive holiday masks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) both state that social distancing and wearing a mask is one of the best things you can do to prevent the spread of COVID-19:

"CDC recommends that people wear masks in public settings, like on public and mass transportation, at events and gatherings, and anywhere they will be around other people." Learn more about masks from the CDC here.

Mask Resources and Tips

It's important to remember that putting together any sort of mask is not enough. Your DIY face mask should:

  1. have at least two layers
  2. be 100% tight-woven cotton or similar fabric
  3. cover your nose and mouth
  4. be well-fitted on your face, plus provide full coverage without gaps or holes around the nose and mouth
  5. Optional: an additional filter in a filter pocket is also recommended for added protection
The face masks provided here might not meet every suggestion by health officials, which is why it's important to learn as much as possible and know what your face mask needs in order to be safe. Also knowing how to wear and care for your mask properly is just as important.

UPDATE 2/2021: From the CDC, "During January 2021, CDC conducted experimental simulations using pliable elastomeric source and receiver headforms to assess the extent to which two modifications to medical procedure masks:
1) wearing a cloth mask over a medical procedure mask (double masking) and 2) knotting the ear loops of a medical procedure mask where they attach to the mask’s edges and then tucking in and flattening the extra material close to the face (knotted and tucked masks), could improve the fit of these masks and reduce the receiver’s exposure to an aerosol of simulated respiratory droplet particles of the size considered most important for transmitting SARS-CoV-2."
