Prep: Cutting Instructions

  1. Cut the following:

    • -Smallest circle, black cotton (2)
    • -Medium circle, brown cotton (2)
    • -Largest circle, white cotton (2)
    • -4 strips measuring 3.5"W X 10"L from the FQ bundle
    • -1 rectangle coordinating fabric, 10"W X 13"L
    • -Both 25" pieces of piping & bias into 2 12.5" pieces

Pencil Case Sewing Pattern Instructions

  1. Cut out and applique the smallest black circle as the pupil, on the medium-sized circle of brown. Applique the brown circle centered in each white circle. Wonder Under and/or freezer paper may be helpful here! Iron on interfacing to the back of each white circle, hiding the stitching and firming up the circle.

  2. Sew the piping around each circle, forming the eyeglass circle.

  3. Sew the 4 strips together lengthwise with 1/4" seam allowance, press all seams open. Trim to 10"W X 13"L.

  4. Layer one side of the patchwork piece right sides together (RST) with the lining piece and zipper, sew alongside the zipper.

  5. Open and press the layers so that the zipper tape is covered. Topstitch.

  6. Repeat the other side of the patchwork piece and lining, enveloping the other side of the zipper with all RST. Sew alongside the zipper.

  7. Open the zipper all the way and topstitch this side, press.

  8. Baste each open side, keeping the raw edges aligned. Then baste the circle in, going slowly and pausing frequently to smooth the layers and ease the circle around. Turn right side out and check that all layers were caught and there are no gathers. Open the zipper half way and turn inside out, repeat for the second side, check, then sew both circles with a normal stitch length and secured.

  9. Trim each end’s seam allowance to 1/8” and encase with bias tape. Turn right side out and press.

  10. And you're done! Fill your Minion pencil case with supplies.
