This tutorial will show you how to make a quilt that is timeless, homey, and will give your home a cozy atmosphere.

Marjolein's Garden Quilt


  • FreeSpirit Garden by Marjolein Bastin fabric:

(1) 1 yard panel PCMB002.CORAL
1/3 yd (30.1cm) PWMB011.TAUPE
3/4 yd (68.6cm) PWMB013.SAND
3/4 yd (68.6cm) PWMB014.GRASS
1/2 yd (45.7cm) PWMB010.ROSEX
4 1/4 yds (3.9m) PWMB015.LEAFX
1 yd (91.4cm) PWMB016.CORAL Outer Border

  • Coordinating Coats & Clark Dual Duty XP® all-purpose thread

Note: All seam allowances are a ¼” (.64cm), unless otherwise noted. WOF = Width of Fabric.

  1. Cut panel to size - cutting 1/4” (.64cm) past the green twisted rope border. The size of the panel will now be 36” x 42” (91.4 x 106.7cm).
  2. Cut brown twisted rope fabric, PWMB011.TAUPE, –2 strips 2-1/2” x 42” (6.35 x 106.7cm) – sew to top and bottom of panel section. (1/4” (.64cm) seams throughout). Cut three additional strips 2 1/2” x WOF (6.35cm x WOF). Piece to make 2 strips – 2-1/2” x 50” (6.35cm x 127cm). Sew to sides of the panel section. The quilt top is now 40” x 46”(101.6 x 116.8cm).
  3. For the checkerboard border make the following strip sets. Cut 9 strips form each fabric – PWMB013. SANDX and PWMB014.GRASS – 2-3/8” x WOF (6cm x WOF). Make three strip sets each way. Press. Cut into 2-3/8” (6cm) strips. Alternate for next border. Sides of the quilt need 24 strip sets each. Top and bottom need 27 strip sets each.
  4. For the outer border, cut 6 strips PWMB016.CORAL 4-1/2” x WOF (11.4cm x WOF). Piece to make strips for the top and bottom – (2) 4-1/2” x 52” (11.4 x 132cm), Piece to make strips for the sides – (2) 4-1/2” x 64-1/2” (11.4 x 163.8cm).
  5. Cut backing fabric into two pieces. Sew together. Press. Layer quilt, batting and backing. Quilt as desired.
  6. Cut 7 strips - 2 1/2” x WOF (6.35cn x WOF) for binding. Stitch end to end. Press in half, lengthwise, wrong sides together and press. Apply as French Fold Binding.
